Between 27th December and 1st January each year, an eclectic mix of visual and performing artists gather at the Woodford Folk Festival. Internationally renowned artists from around the world as well as talented local and national performers participate. A strong emphasis is placed on including indigenous and multicultural communities in the 6 day festival programme. The Folklines multicultural programme this year features hundreds of artists and performance groups representing 32 countries.

 


Dance Performance Highlights

Unsurpassed virtuosity and versatility feature in the dance displays at the Folklorica Stage and throughout the festival. From the Pacific region comes Maoiha Maori Cultural Group, a powerful haka and dance group, and from Papua New Guinea, the Milne Bay Dancers. For your Indian culture festival experience there is Rohith Badya, an Indian Yakshagana dancer, The Singh Sisters, an Indian bhangra dance group (with dohl drummers) and the Brisbane Bollywood Dancers. From the Balkans comes Yorgo Kaporis, a Macedonian / Balkan dancer extraordinaire, who is the lead dancer and choreographer with Sydney based international touring group the Macedonian Dance Ensemble Ilinden. Originally from the Sop region of Bulgaria comes singer and dancer Veronika Zaharieva. She has performed professionally with ‘Iglika’ Bulgarian Folk Dance Ensemble from Plovdiv. Also from the Balkan region come the Croatian Folkloric Dance Group, Brisbane, and Sule Mesic, a Bosnian accordionist and dancer from Modrichki Sevdah. Artists from Latin America include Maygualida Rodriguez & Israel Ortiz of the Cuban Dance Company, festival favourites Bolivia Marka and the much loved and talented Cachicamo Latin Harp and Cachicamo Colombian Dancers, a colorful dance tour featuring indigenous, European and African influences. So join Elkin and Sandra for a Latin Dance Extravaganza in the Dance Venue supported by the latest Salsa Band in Queensland “The Latin Brothers”…. The salsa will be hot and funky to crazy and cool.
